From WOW COMICS# 17, Back in 1943. I always liked this character because of the inherent oddness of a prepubescent girl blithely beating the tar out of gangsters, monsters, big animals, you name it. Many of her stories strayed way too far into the Twee, but as the trend toward horror came in vogue, even Mary found herself tackling hordes of vampire bats and the like. It’s odd too that Mary aged during the 1940s. Both Billy Batson and Fredddy Freeman looked the same in their final appearances as they did on their first page, but Mary grew from maybe eleven years old to around fifteen or sixteen, and as she aged in her human form, the superpowered Mary Marvel incarnation grew with her. I don’t know what was going on behind the scenes at Fawcett, if the artist just slowly drew Mary going through puberty or if the editor and publisher decided to throw a teeny bit of sex appeal into the Marvel Family but Mary was definitely more nubile after the war. Captain Marvel himself put on a bit of weight over the years. He was definitely more beefy after the first few lanky years. In their crossover battle, Spy Smasher called him “huge” “a brute” and a “big ape.”
